Description: Portrait of George Washington Williams. George Washington Williams was born in Bedford Springs, Pennsylania on October 16, 1849. During his lifetime, he was an American Civil War veteran, minister, journalist, politician and historian. He was the first African-American to be elected to the Ohio State Legislature in 1880. He died on August 2, 1891 in Blackpool, England. He is buried in Layton Cemetery in Blackpool. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Carte de visite portrait of Q.A. (Quincy Adams) Gillmore in military uniform. Gillmore (1825-1888) was an Ohioan who rose to the rank of major general during the Civil War. One of the best artillerists and engineers in the army, he was in charge of the taking of Fort Polaski, and went on to command the Department of the South, which including the Carolinas, Florida, and Georgia. Gillmore insisted on integrating his command, and decreed that African American troops should be given the same combat service as white regiments, rather than menial labor. The 54th Massachusetts, the famous African-American regiment, was under his command when they assaulted Fort Wagner, in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to his military career, Gillmore (1825-1888) was a civil engineer and an author. He was born in Black River, Ohio, and as a young man graduated first in his class at West Point.
